Gerard Spronk is een Nederlands-Zwitsers violist met een internationale muziekcarrière. Hij is regelmatig te horen op radio en televisie en heeft prijzen gewonnen op de Iordens Viooldagen, het Davina van Wely Vioolconcours en het Prinses Christina Concours. Als gepassioneerd kamermusicus treed Gerard vaak op met muzikale vrienden en heeft hij samengespeeld met musici als Candida Thompson, Harriet Krijgh, Carla Leurs, Thomas Zehetmair en Clemens Hagen. Ook deelt hij graag het podium met zijn broer, cellist Anton Spronk. Sinds 2023 is Gerard aanvoerder van de tweede violen bij het Residentie Orkest in Den Haag. Ook bij andere orkesten is hij regelmatig te gast als gastconcertmeester of aanvoerder, onder andere bij Phion, Orkest van Gelderland & Overijssel, het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, het Noord Nederlands Orkest en Amsterdam Sinfonietta.
Gerard begon zijn vioolstudie bij Coosje Wijzenbeek en behaalde zijn Bachelor of Music bij Vera Beths aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Daarna studeerde hij achtereenvolgens in Salzburg, Zürich en Basel en behaalde drie masterdiploma’s, elk Cum Laude. In Salzburg studeerde hij aan de Universität Mozarteum Salzburg in de vioolklas van Pierre Amoyal. In Zürich vervolgde Gerard zijn studie bij Andreas Janke aan de Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. Tot slot volgde hij nog een master met kamermuziek als specialisatie bij Anton Kernjak en Rainer Schmidt in Basel. Gerard kreeg gedurende zijn studietijd ook belangrijke muzikale impulsen van verschillende andere violisten, waaronder Julian Rachlin, David Takeno, Isabelle van Keulen, Philippe Graffin, Rudolf Koelman, Ivry Gitlis en Miriam Fried. Sinds het afronden van zijn studie geeft Gerard graag coaching en masterclasses aan jongere musici en is hij ook actief als jurylid bij concoursen, zoals het Nederlands Vioolconcours.
Meer dan tien jaar geleden was Gerard medeoprichter van het Delta Pianotrio, waarin hij tegenwoordig samenwerkt met cellist Nuala McKenna and pianist Vera Kooper. Het trio won in 2020 de Kersjesprijs, de belangrijkste Nederlandse kamermuziekprijs ter waarde van 50.000 euro. Ze zijn verder meervoudig eerste prijswinnaars van concoursen als het Stasys VainiÅ«nas Internationaal Kamermuziekconcours in Litouwen, het Salieri-Zinetti Internationaal Kamermuziekconcours in Italië, het Orlando Internationaal Kamermuziekconcours in Nederland en het Orpheus Kamermuziekconcours in Zwitserland. Het trio heeft veelvuldig opgetreden in Europa, Rusland, Israel, China, Korea, Indonesië en de Verenigde Staten in zalen als Het Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), het National Centre for the Performing Arts (Beijing), het Gangdong Arts Centre (Seoul) en St. John's Smith Square (Londen). Van het ensemble zijn vier albums verschenen: een debuut-CD bij Naxos Records, ‘The Mirror with Three Faces’ bij Odradek Records, ‘Origin’ bij Challenge Classics en ‘Milking Darkness’, ook bij Challenge Classics. Deze albums ontvingen elk lovende reacties van de internationale pers.
Gerard is ook initiatiefnemer van ‘Klassiek komt naar iedereen’. Dit maatschappelijk initiatief heeft als doel om de prachtige klassieke muziek die klinkt in de Nederlandse concertzalen ook te brengen naar mensen die er niet mee in aanraking komen. Gerard heeft een viool van Antonio Gragnani gebouwd in 1773 uit de collectie van het Nationaal Muziekinstrumenten Fonds in bruikleen.
Gerard Spronk is a Dutch-Swiss violinist with an international music career. He appears regularly on radio and television, and has won prices at competitions such as the Iordens Viooldagen, the Davina van Wely Violin Competition and the Princess Christina Competition. As a passionate chamber musician Gerard often performs with musical friends and he has played together with artists such as Candida Thompson, Harriet Krijgh, Carla Leurs, Thomas Zehetmair and Clemens Hagen. He also enjoys sharing the stage with his brother, cellist Anton Spronk. Since 2023 Gerard is principal second violin at the Residentie Orkest The Hague. He also regularly appears as guest concertmaster or leader in other orchestras such as Phion, Orchestra of Gelderland & Overijssel, the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, the North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra and Amsterdam Sinfonietta.
Gerard started his violin studies in the Netherlands with Coosje Wijzenbeek and finished his Bachelor of Music with Vera Beths at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Subsequently, he went on to study in Salzburg, Zurich and Basel and obtained three master’s degrees, all with distinction. In Salzburg he studied at the University Mozarteum Salzburg in the class of Pierre Amoyal. In Zurich he continued his studies with Andreas Janke at the Zurich University of the Arts. Lastly, he completed a master specialised in chamber music with Anton Kernjak en Rainer Schmidt in Basel. Gerard also received important musical impulses from various other violinists, including Julian Rachlin, David Takeno, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Vadim Gluzman, Ivry Gitlis and Miriam Fried. Since completing his studies, Gerard enjoys giving coaching and masterclasses to younger musicians and he is also active as jury member for competitions such as the Nederlands Vioolconcours.
More then ten years ago Gerard co-founded the Delta Piano Trio, currently working together in the trio with cellist Nuala McKenna and pianist Vera Kooper. In 2020, the trio won the Kersjes Prize, the most important chamber music award in the Netherlands worth 50,000 euros. They have also won numerous other awards, including first prizes at the Stasys VainiÅ«nas International Chamber Music Competition in Lithuania, the Salieri-Zinetti International Chamber Music Competition in Italy, the Orlando International Chamber Music Competition in the Netherlands and the Orpheus Chamber Music Competition in Switzerland. The trio has performed extensively in Europe, Russia, Israel, China, Korea, Indonesia and the United States in venues such as The Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), the National Centre for the Performing Arts (Beijing), the Gangdong Arts Centre (Seoul) and St. John’s Smith Square (London). The ensemble has released four albums to international acclaim: a debut CD recorded for Naxos Records, ‘The Mirror with Three Faces’ with Odradek Records, ‘Origin’ with Challenge Classics and ‘Milking Darkness’, also with Challenge Classics.
Gerard is also initiator of ‘Classical comes to everyone’. This social initiative has to goal to bring the beautiful classical music that sounds in the concert halls also to people who do not come in contact with it. Gerard has a violin made by Antonio Gragnani in 1773 on loan from the collection of the Dutch Musical Instruments Foundation.
